Purpose of African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization:

The ministry fosters the Church's mission to preach the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments, and form a faith community.

This requires more involvement of African Ancestry Catholics in the life of the parishes and the diocese. This will enhance their lives as Catholics.

Fostering an appreciation of African Ancestry culture in the Church is an important part of this ministry.

In 1978 Bishop F. Joseph Gossman at the request of the Council of Priests of the Diocese of Raleigh established "The Office of African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization" to promote and foster this purpose.

The office of African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization:

The office is headed by a Vicar appointed by the Bishop. There is a director named to operate the Office on a daily basis. There is an Advisory Board of two people from each Parish where the Ministry has a Chapter. This sees to the fulfillment of the purpose of the ministry on the parish level.

The Chapter works in the parish as part of the parish structure. Membership is open to all parishioners. There are fifteen chapters. Two of these Chapters were started by parishioners who are not of African Ancestry.

The local Chapter strives to foster a strong faith among active African Ancestry Catholics; seek to reconcile to the Church those who have fallen away and to offer the Catholic Church as a church home to the un-churched.
